Doing It Right – McKinsey Integrates Social Media

McKinsey is recognized as a premier Strategy firm and a business thought-leader. From what you will see next, their thought leadership evidently extends to their marketing and social media activities as well.  I have subscribed to McKinsey Quarterly for quite a while and have always been impressed with their insights. The most recent edition exemplifies some great social media best practices.  This post highlights a handful of examples of how McKinsey uses social media in conjunction with their Direct Mail and Web Content. Each component is excellent.

1. Email Newsletter

The image below shows the actual text from a periodic McKinsey Quarterly email. Each article has social media sharing options.

2. Email Newsletter to Twitter transition

If you click on a Twitter “Share” option in the email, McKinsey makes it easy to distribute by pre filling your text with both a @mckquarterly retweet + shortened URL.

3. Web Content

Clicking on the article link takes you directly to McKinsey Quarterly where the Social Media components are everywhere. I especially like the multiple tiers of engagement options. Having the Primary Call To Action box (Keep In Touch) in the right corner “above the fold” supports natural top-right to bottom-left page viewing styles.

4. Twitter to Web

If you go to McKinsey Quarterly on Twitter, all will see that all their tweets (at least all the ones that I have seen) have shortened URLs that link back to only their web content.

All in all, McKinsey Quarterly is doing a tremendous job of  integrating Social Media across their marketing initiatives and using Social Media to reinforce their thought leadership brand.
